As a veteran, you’ve earned more than just our gratitude — you’ve earned benefits that protect your legacy and ease the burden on your family. Among the most meaningful of these are the funeral and burial benefits offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Still, many veterans and their families don’t realize what’s available, or how to claim it. If you’re wondering what to expect or where to start, you’re not alone — and we’re here to help
.
What Burial Benefits Are Available for Veterans?
If you’re an eligible veteran, the VA offers several important benefits at no cost to your family, including:
Burial in a VA National Cemetery
Includes a gravesite, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate — all provided free of charge.
Headstone or Marker
If you choose to be buried in a private cemetery, the VA will still provide a government headstone or marker at no cost.
Burial Flag
This symbolic honor is folded and presented to your next of kin during the service.
Funeral Reimbursement
The VA may cover some or all of the costs of your funeral. The amount depends on whether your death is service-related, and whether you are hospitalized in a VA facility at the time of death.
What’s New in 2025?
The claim process in 2025 remains similar to previous years, but preparation is key:
-
Your family must apply for the benefits after your passing.
-
Required documents often include your DD214 discharge papers and other service records.
-
Without a clear plan in place, your loved ones may face delays or confusion when trying to access your benefits.
How to Make the Process Easier for Your Family
The best way to ensure your burial benefits are received quickly and without stress is to prepare in advance — and that’s where we come in.
